ABOUT COVENANT LIFE
The church began when three congregations from Castilian Springs, Tennessee, Gallatin, Tennessee, and Durham, North Carolina, decided that the newly opened territory in Oklahoma was fertile ground for religious and economic development. When they arrived, they merged with a local congregation to form Second Street Baptist Church, so named due to its location in a storefront at Second and Hudson in what would later be known as Oklahoma City. Second Street Baptist opened its doors for the first service in October 1880. The church purchased the building and moved it to a lot on Second St. between Hudson and Walker, and stayed there until 1896. Second Street Baptist changed its name to St. Paul Baptist, then joined with another church and moved to 308 West California. The congregation then took the name Calvary Baptist Church, built a permanent building, and remained on California until 1923. From there, Calvary moved to 300 North Walnut. The church at North Walnut was a central location for the African-American community, hosting meetings for the NAACP, a diabetes detection clinic, graduation ceremonies for Douglass High School, and serving as the rallying point for civil rights marches led by activists such as Clara Luper.
As time passed, many men stood in the pulpit of Calvary, declaring the Word of the Lord. In 1993, when God called Pastor James H. Davis, Sr. to lead the house, there was no pastor, and the building was in disrepair. God made a promise to Pastor Davis: “If you go, I will rebuild!” Out of love and obedience, Pastor Davis and his family came to Oklahoma City to serve in leadership of Calvary Baptist Church. On April 19, 1995, Calvary was among many buildings that sustained damage in the Murrah bombing. God favored Pastor Phillip E. Davis in the eyes of US Rep. Frank Lucas who, at Pastor Phil’s request, extended the reconstruction funding boundary to include Calvary’s building. This change served to fulfill the promise the Lord made. The restoration was completed in 1997.
In 1999, Pastor James Davis entered God’s eternal embrace, passing the mantle of leadership to Pastor Phillip Davis. Under the revelation of the Holy Spirit, the Calvary family was moved to “drop the denominational flag and raise the Cross”. Calvary Baptist became CovenantLife Family Worship Center in 2001. God opened the door for ministry on Langston University’s campus in 2007, with the development of the Truth Seekers
Bible Study group. Over the years, Truth Seekers blossomed into CovenantLife—Langston. CovenantLife—OKC moved to 1212 North Hudson in 2012.
In late 2014, the mantle of leadership passed to Pastor Robert H. Davis. Pastor “Bob” was officially installed as the Senior Pastor on February 7, 2015. On this day, God declared that He is delivering “A Mature Word to a Mature House”. In April 2015, CovenantLife—OKC moved to 2023 Northeast 23 rd Street, where we are continuing to build on a strong, loving, unified foundation.
We remember our history and press toward the mark of the high calling of God!
